Dr. Dazelle Dean Simpson, MD
Founder
1925 – 2020Dr. Dazelle Dean Simpson founded this practice in Miami and became the first African-American pediatrician in Florida certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, receiving her certification in General Pediatrics on October 1, 1957.
A Miami native and granddaughter of Coconut Grove pioneer E.W.F. Stirrup, she graduated from Fisk College in Nashville in 1945 and earned her medical degree from Meharry Medical College in 1950. She met her husband, Dr. George Simpson, at Meharry; he became the first board-certified African-American surgeon in Florida. The two moved to Coconut Grove after graduating and practiced medicine in the Miami area for more than 40 years.
She practiced in Liberty City and Overtown, made house calls across South Florida, and was a nationally recognized advocate for children, particularly African-American children in Florida. She retired in 1995 after 42 years in practice and died on February 9, 2020, aged 95.
